How to book

Illustrative pictures, working with silk organza & hand stitch

4 days: 19th-23rd August

Learn how to create delicate textile pictures, working on a portrait or still life subject of your choice, using layers of silk organza and hand stitching. Bring your own drawings, photographs and written thoughts or phrases as a starting point for your piece.

What students will achieve

You’ll make test pieces using layers of sheer fabrics, silk paint and hand stitching, to decide how to interpret your image. Play with the colour created by combining different coloured organzas and see how you can use stitches to create different effects.

Using a variety of media including pencil, watercolour and silk paint, you will learn to transfer your images on to translucent fabrics and build layers and areas of colour. Putting what you’ve learned into practice, you will create the backdrop for your stitched illustration by building layers and areas of coloured organza, then apply hand stitched areas to bring your work to life with both texture and colour.

Class kit

Packs containing white linen and silk organza in mixed colours – all the fabric you need – will be available in class, priced £10.
