Reflections on Trees

2 days: 17h-18th August 2026   Fee: £275.00

Print place stitch, an exploration developing a stitched scroll form.

Trees in the landscape, an evocative source of inspiration. Be they clusters of silver birch trees, tall poplars, riverbank reflections, wooded pathways, or woodland with glimpses of landscape beyond. In spring and summer swathed in shades of green, in autumn a riot of browns, reds and yellows, in winter sculptural forms in an earthy palette of subtle greys, browns, ochre and lichen grey and green. Take a walk amongst trees and choose your colour inspiration to explore using gestural mark making in simple print, with a limited colour palette. Fragment, rearrange and place printed cloth and paper to create an evocative scroll in response to trees, creating a piece to work and develop with hand stitch.

Work with loose expressive mark making, developing visual language using a variety of drawing media with simple collage techniques and stitch in a relaxed and creative approach to textile development. The aim of the course is to develop expressive techniques with mark making and explore visual language through simplification and abstraction. Work within the restriction of a limited palette through experimentation with simple printed forms to develop with hand stitch. Working with trees as inspiration, developing responses and colour notes, observing shape, line, and colour within your view, responding to experiences of trees. Simplify, abstract and fragment images to create individual outcomes from personal inspiration to be drawn upon in later work appreciated and enjoyed.

Suitable for those who enjoy the challenge of intuitive experimentation, exploration and extension of creative boundaries who have an open mind and a desire to explore.
